Every award show is filled with smashes and crashes when it comes to fashion on the Red Carpet and the 2012 Golden Globes were no exception. It was clear last night which category each actor belonged in. I found most of the gowns to be either truly amazing or a true nightmare. One of the scariest fashion moments I have ever seen aired on live television was when the two worst dressed women presented side by side on stage – you all know who I am talking about! But if you don’t, it is absolutely worth googling Sarah Michelle Gellar and Piper Perabo – shame on both you and your stylists, ladies! The evening was filled with more crashes along with some big smashes. Here are some of my favorite ones…
Angelina Jolie – SMASH – love her in this gorgeous Atelier Versace gown. The color, slit and neckline were all well executed in the design. Angelina exuded edgy elegance which is very fitting for her.
Jessica Biel – CRASH – why is one of the hottest bodies in Hollywood hiding behind this awful Reem Acra frock? It is wrong on so many levels. If she is going to marry Justin Timberlake she better step it up. I think Madonna intentionally stepped on her hem hoping to rip the dress off!
Sofia Vergara – SMASH – this Vera Wang Custom designed gown was perfect. The color was great and it fit her like a glove.
Sarah Michelle Gellar – CRASH – this Monique Lhuillier gown was all wrong. The dress definitly wore her. Way too much fabric. Way too much print. It is clear that her two year old daughter selected it. They should have consulted with Suri Cruise!
Reese Witherspoon – SMASH – this Zac Posen dress looks amazing on her. It is all about “the shape” when it comes to this gown. It also doesn’t hurt that it is the perfect shade of red.
Lea Michele – CRASH- this is one of the few Marchesa gowns that I have not liked over the years. To me, there is too much going on with the design of the beading and I always find these sheer dresses a bit tacky.
Emma Stone – SMASH – I was a big fan of this Lanvin gown. I loved the colors and texture of the plisse fabric along with the detailed shoulders. The eagle belt somehow worked and she managed to be appropriately edgy. In one word, Emma Stone just looks “cool.”
Piper Perabo – CRASH – This dress is just bad. It doesn’t make sense to me. The sheer top is not well done and is competing with the parachute skirt. I was surprised to hear that it was Theskens’ Theory. Olivier Theyskens did an amazing job designing Nina Ricci a few years back – remember when Reese wore all of his designs to events? So I am surprised that this poorly designed dress came from him.
Claire Danes – SMASH – This gown by J. Mendel is a true stunner. I love the way the black and white is combined to create this piece. The beading also enhances the dress in all the right places. Impressive.
Zooey Deschanel – ASH – I know there were some mixed reviews here, hence the “ASH” description. I agree her hair is all wrong and is taking away from the dress. However, if you can get past the hair and focus on this beautiful Prada gown, it is quite something. I love the beading which is a combination of green, black and diamond like stones. I find this gown to be beautiful, fashion forward and very appropriate for this particular actress even if I am in the minority!
